Historically mistaken for gold, pyrite is actually iron sulfide and has an opaque, shiny, metallic luster. Though very brittle, the gemstone is harder than gold and leaves a greenish-black streak, while gold leaves a golden-yellow one. Pyrite is also magnetic.
